Design by memory
Weekly Design
Hey friends 👋
This is Balint from “The Psychology Behind Design”.
Every Thursday, I share 3 quick product design tips for founders and designers.
3-2-1: Vamos!
Strange how we remember bad experiences better than good ones.
Lost data. Confusing interfaces. Frustrating flows. They stick with us.
Yet smooth interactions fade from memory instantly.
We forget well-designed experiences right after using them.
Good design works like muscle memory. You don't think about it. You just do it.
Like how you unlock your phone without looking, navigate your home in the dark or find the light switch in a familiar room.
This challenges everything we think about innovative design.
Maybe great products should fade into the background.
Like good infrastructure or reliable utilities.
But there's a catch.
Products that fade completely get replaced easily.
No emotional connection. No loyalty. No stories to tell.
The sweet spot lives somewhere between invisible and memorable.
Just noticeable enough to build trust. Just familiar enough to feel reliable.
Just different enough to have character.
Watch how people use their favorite products.
They don't talk that much about the design.
They talk about what it helps them achieve and how it makes them feel.
That's worth remembering.

Such a great breakdown, Balint!
The negativity bias is so real... I can always remember bad design, but the good stuff ones are not as noticeable
Totally agree the trick is giving good design a little character so it actually sticks.
